Ilulissat (Jakobshavn)

Ilulissat is one of the main tourist destinations in Greenland and with good reason . It lies just north of the famous Kangerlua (Ice Fiord) and looks across the ice packed Disko bay to Disko Island.

There is a small space to anchor just inside the harbour or you can go the usual route of rafting.

The inner harbour is packed with small boats on floating wharves, you would be lucky to find space to tie up.
We were told that there can be a tidal wave in the harbour, called a Kanele, caused by icebergs getting pushed out of the near bye ice fiord. We didn't experience a Kanele but it is worth getting well anchored or tied up just in case.
This photo was taken at about 2.00 am. It shows a local boat leaving the harbour. You can go boating 24 hrs a day in the Arctic.
