Siem Reap

I spent most of my time at the temples and mostly missed out on the charms of Siem Reap something I rectified in 2007

Artisans D'Angkor

As if there are not enough heads of King Jayavarman Vll in Siem Reap

Along with Chantiers-Ecoles train talented young people in stone and wood carving, lacquering, gilding and silk weaving.  During training they receive an allowance, tools and clothes.  Upon completion the young artisans are offered an internship. When fully qualified they may work in Siem Reap or in their village workshops.  Well paid, they belong to an artisans association and have a 20% stake in the company

There are many beautiful things to see at the showroom in Siem Reap and to a lesser extent at the airport shops.  Their goods are of a high quality and the prices reflects that

Take a tour of the workshops and weaving sheds or driver out to their silk farm

The silk farm is about 16km West of town and you can see the whole process from the mulberry tree to the finished silk.  Many of the patterns are ancient royal designs researched with the help of neighbouring Thai experts in the silk manufacture

Not having the budget for a helicopter flight over Angkor Wat, For $1, I visited the garden of a local master sculptor to see his scale model

High Class Dining, The FCC - Foreign Correspondents Club
