 Wat Hua Xiang

Simple Wat and monks quarters

Portico with Wat Mahathat in the background

Less spectacular than it's more famous neighbour but we loved the tranquility.  There were only four monks and one nun in residence

   along with eighteen novices

Monks quarters were basic, the lone nun lived in a derelict wooden shed

Kuang Si Falls

A short drive South of the city.  A three level falls with many cascades.   One of the pools is sacred to Buddhists but you can swim in all the others

Q) How do you spot a Canadian tourist?   A) He is the stranger with the Tilley hat shading your lens

The National Museum in the former Royal Palace

The palace was not on the Pathet Lao list of must preserves in 1975 and it was totally destroyed.  It was rebuilt in a French Beaux Art and traditional Laos style.  Haw Pha Band was built to house the most sacred  Phra Bang Buddha which  now resides in the museum

The quarters of the deposed royal family are just as they left them to go into a re-education camp where it is believed but unconfirmed that they died

The Night Market

Popular with visitors and locals alike, it teems with costumed minority women, their sleeping babies and the goods they bring to market
