Nuuk (Godthab) 64 10N 51 44W

This is the first view you get when approaching Greenland's capital by sea - just a few of the dozens of rather drab apartment buildings which cover the city. To be fair, I didn't find the apartment buildings as depressing a sight as I expected.

Nuuk has a population of about 15,000 which is 25% of the total for Greenland.

We approached from the south via the Narssaq Lob.

This is Vestre Vig, the SW arm of the main harbour and is probably the best place to tie up in Nuuk. There is a boat club (marina) in Nuussuaq further NE which is a good place to get water. The boat club was packed with small boats when we were there with no room to tie up.

The two places are about equal distance from down town but Vestre Vig is closer to the Seaman's Mission for showers and there is a supermarket on the SE side.

The main wharf is unsuitable for small boats so it is best to raft. No one minds but it is a good idea to check when the adjacent boat is planning to leave.

We checked into the country with the harbour master who wasn't very interested. He made a phone call to immigration for us and even forgot to ask our names!

There is very little level space in any Greenland town so houses are perched on any available rock.

I enjoyed walking round Nuuk. There is a tremendous contrast between drab apartment buildings and single homes like the one on the hill.
