Built on a hill the  temple mountain of Ta Keo pre dates Angkor Wat and also represents Mount Meru.

One of the tallest monuments in Angkor, the first temple  with five towers in the form of an X and built entirely from sandstone.

Dedicated to Shiva it was known  as ‘the mountain with golden peaks'.  The temple was never finished and is without decorative carvings beyond the base.

The stairs are unusual in that they are a single flight and of a constant width.

Shrine within the central tower.

A quick look back at the steps,  I had been up and down them several times escorting elderly (ie. older than me) Cambodian ladies.  They managed the ascent but just couldn't face making the climb down.
