Tony, our guide and driver preparing to leave the Mexai Guesthouse in Nong Khaiw.

This is a nice clean place to stay with a friendly family whose young son speaks some English.

The shower and toilet were in the yard below but then we only paid $2 for the night.

Tham Pha Thok Cave

One of the many limestone caves in Northern Laos which housed the Pathet Lao and villagers  during the  Indochina war and the bombing campaign of the US so called 'Secret War'.

Many villagers moved to large cities or lived in refugee camps.  But many others stayed close to their homes, living in caves, only coming out under cover of darkness  to work their fields.

This cave, a short hike from Nong  Khawi is open to the public.  The stairway leads to the mouth of the cave, marked with the red and blue striped flag of the Pathet Lao.

One of many such home made signs posted in fields around Laos

Breakfast on the road for the UXO LAO bomb disposal team.   The nets behind the vehicle are for catching  birds.
